POWER TO THE PEOPLE - Weekly Protest
Every Sunday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
On E. Battlefield Rd between S. Fremont Ave & S. Delaware Ave
(in front of the old Toys”R”Us)
EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
WHO IS THIS EVENT FOR? EVERYONE! For those of you that have already been out with us at the many events that have been held in the city as well as new community members just joining the fight for our democracy. Everyone is welcome!
WHY ANOTHER PROTEST? Communities across the nation are starting this. We need to remember this is a marathon, not a sprint. Having an event in the same place, same time, same day can be scheduled for and may bring more people to the event. Our intention is to communicate with the public in a different way. Although still a protest, perhaps it being consistent and on a smaller scale may not be so intimating the first-time participant.
WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER EVENTS? The groups in the area are putting together wonderful events for our community. This takes hard work and planning. Upcoming events are listed on our EVENTS PAGE. This weekly protest does not in any way intent to distract or take away from those carefully planned events, on the contrary, we are hoping to bring more people in, being able to inform them and invite them to the events that fit their passion and schedules.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY “FIND YOUR PASSION”? The current administration has intentionally overloaded the American people with rapid fire issues. There are so many things in jeopardy like Social Security, LGBTQIA+ Rights, Veteran Right’s, Voting processes and more. There are also logistical things like planning events and safety during these events. By getting to know new people we can listen to your concerns and help guide you to a group that is like-minded. A group that is working to solve the issues regarding your passion.
GUIDELINES FOR THESE EVENTS:
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS as a protester. The ACLU has great information. Please click here to learn more.
FOLLOW LAWS use the crosswalk, don’t block traffic, stay on the sidewalk. Give NO REASON to engage the police or cause issues with the community or businesses. Listen to the safety people on site, be together as a group and NEVER engage with a counter-protester.
SAFETY is of the utmost importance. De-escalation techniques will be communicated upon your arrival and required by all participants. Participants that do not follow these guidelines will be asked to leave the area. If you would like to volunteer to be a part of the “Safety Team” please email us at communitytogether417@gmail.com to get connected to our safety group. We need safety volunteers; training will be provided. There is a de-escalation video from “Move-On” prior to the April 5th “Hand Off” event, it can be viewed by clicking here.
SIGNS All topics are welcome but MUST BE RESPECTFUL. The content of the protest sign is crucial. Not only should it have a concise message, but it also needs to deliver the tone to passers-by. The content of just one protest sign can make the difference between someone walking away in disgust, taking a picture to share on social media, or even joining in on the protest. To this end, humor can sometimes be one of the most effective things to include on a protest sign, but if done poorly, it can actively turn people away. Likewise, a warm message of inclusion will set a different tone for your activity than a fired-up call to action. It is crucial that thought is put into their content, and that they aren’t thrown together haphazardly. Be creative! Participants that have a sign with foul language or an inappropriate message will be asked to put them in their car. Please learn more about making signs by clicking here.
MINOR CHILDREN must be accompanied by an adult and kept with them at ALL TIMES. This is a protest, it is your discretion to bring your minor child but there may be safety concerns, so keep that in mind
